Greetings from the Austerlitz Historical Society, where our “financial” thoughts focus primarily on two fundraisers that have become an integral part of Austerlitz and our community.
The last Sunday in July marks the ever-popular Blueberry Festival, celebrating all things blueberry, plus vendors, crafters and top-notch entertainment throughout the day. On the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend, our annual Autumn in Austerlitz Festival takes visitors back to a simpler life of an old-time harvest festival and community gathering. Fresh-pressed apple cider, butter churning and craft demonstrations abound, as visitors make their way to our food court to enjoy homemade soups and fresh baked bread or to just to sit a spell on the lawn and listen to American folk music drift through the field.
Additionally, your support helps us to offer quality presentations at our quarterly meetings. If you haven’t been to one, you’ve missed out on learning about One-Room Schoolhouses in America, Damsels and Dragonflies, The Cannibal of Austerlitz, Oscar Beckwith, the growth of the Edna St. Vincent Millay Society, Butter: A Rich History, In the Shadow of Death — Illness in the early 19th Century, and much, much more.
The Austerlitz Historical Society, with our 9 buildings and nearly 20 acres of fields set at the base of Harvey Mountain, is a community centerpiece for our area bringing together young and old, local and visitor, history buffs and fun seekers. From May to October we attract nearly 3,000 people who visit Austerlitz to learn more about our history and heritage and to enjoy their time in our quiet little town.
We enjoy spending time with our visitors, letting them tour our buildings dating from the 1780’s to the 1850’s, and taking in the views of our spectacular property. This is part of our mission afterall — a mission requiring the assistance of our volunteers, our membership, our Board of Trustees and our community partners. Your donations help to offset a portion of our annual operating expenses and help pay for festival items such as entertainment, tent rentals, portable sanitary facilities and advertising costs, just to name a few.
